In honor of All Saints Day this past weekend, I wanted to share this hilarious blog post from FOCUS. (I think my favorite is #12!) I’ve already written about all of us being called to sanctity in different ways, so I thought I would share something a little lighter this week.
On Sunday night, I was helping with high school ministry at my church. It was a casual evening: we sat around a bonfire making hot dogs and s’mores, and one of our parish priests talked to us about the saints. He told stories of some his favorite saints and his most detailed story revolved around St. Maria Goretti, whose relics recently passed through my hometown. I loved listening to him speak about these humble and holy people. Their lives are so incredibly different from each other, but the one common thread is their devotion to Christ. And that devotion is something that we are all called to achieve.
One of my favorite moments of the night was when I was trying to climb over some of the high schoolers to roast my hot dog on the fire, and I nearly tripped into the fire pit. Our priest poked fun at me and mentioned that perhaps I was called to be the patron saint of hot dogs. While this is a ridiculous idea (I mean, I’d rather be the patron saint of s’mores… or tacos…), it did pop a question into my head: what would I truly want to be the patron saint of?
That’s my challenge to you this week, to think of aspects of your life that are important to you that you would want to stand for after you pass from this life. I would also challenge you to do a little research on things that are important to you (i.e. running, reading, fashion, etc.) because there is probably a saint in heaven ready to intercede for you regarding those things. The saints are amazing—may God give us the grace to become more like the saint He is calling us to be every day!
